A normal pregnancy results in a number of important physiological and hormonal changes that alter thyroid function. These changes mean that laboratory tests of thyroid function must be interpreted with caution during pregnancy. Normal hormonal changes can sometimes make thyroid function tests during pregnancy difficult to interpret. This presentation will discuss some of the more common thyroid problems associated with pregnancy. These include: hyperthyroidism which occurs in about one of every 500 pregnancies, hypothyroidism which occurs in about two of every 500 pregnancies and postpartum thyroiditis which occurs in about 7% of women.

Requests for Vitamin D measurement continue to increase due. It is important to consider several factors when evaluating an automated assay, including measurement characteristics, standardization, and clinical concordance between methods. Recently a consensus panel addressed published recommendations for vitamin D measurement, such as sample type, preferred units, equimolar measurement, etc. Standardization also remains an important topic, and it is essential to compare automated methods with LC/MS/MS and their performance in EQA programs. Finally, when comparing assays, both the regression between assays should be considered as well.

The Siemens serum HER-2/neu test is indicated for monitoring metastatic breast cancer patients whose initial serum HER-2/neu levels are greater than 15 ng/mL. Monitoring serum HER-2/neu levels provides information about response to therapy and cancer progression, which aids physicians in making more informed decisions about modifying patient treatment regimens. This presentation will review patients’ clinical course in relation to their serum HER-2/neu levels.
