As a leading health care supplier Siemens Medical Solutions, together with its partners and customers, analyzes and continuously optimizes overall workflow scenarios including their implementation. Siemens Medical Solutions integrates healthcare IT with diagnostics, oncology information systems, therapy planning and treatment control. All these systems are designed to add options for future improvements such as additional imaging modalities or changes in the workflow.
All treatment rooms are equipped with a robotic table base which smoothly moves the patient to the treatment position defined in the treatment plan.
The robotic table base positions the tabletop within six degrees of freedom (3 room coordinates plus isocentric rotation, tilt and roll) to meet the required position within a high level of accuracy.
The patient and imaging positioning robots were developed together with one of the leading manufacturers of robotic systems known for their considerable experience in high accuracy industrial robotic systems.
Patient positioning and imaging with the support of robotic systems is unique – however, robotic systems are a leading innovation – one that is combined with years of proven stringent robot requirements in industrial applications. The Siemens PT robots are constructed following the guidelines for medical products. Extensive safety mechanisms have been installed in the robot control system.
The Siemens Particle Therapy solution includes a universal patient support system, which is used for transport, planning, positioning, verification, and treatment. The tabletop in combination with a shuttle is used as the patient support in the immobilization room. This shuttle with tabletop is also used for transport to the CT room for therapy planning or to the treatment room. CT rooms for therapy planning and treatment rooms are equipped with a robotic table base which docks to the tabletop and positions the patient comfortably and smoothly.
As a result patient immobilization can be performed outside the treatment room, maximizing the utilization ratio of the treatment rooms. Immobilization and treatment are scheduled depending on the patient’s course of treatment. Patient scheduling is optimized to assure the shortest possible immobilization time for each patient and to allow for maximum utilization of the treatment rooms.
After the CT exam for therapy planning or after a treatment session, the robotic table base returns the tabletop with the immobilized patient to the shuttle. The patient is then returned to the preparation room to remove the immobilization devices.
Position verification in the treatment rooms is performed in treatment position via robotic X-ray imaging or a Cone Beam CT. Position offset corrections are calculated automatically, and the data are transferred to the syngo PT Treatment workspace. The therapist can remain outside the treatment room during the verification process and correction of the patient position.
