Different requirements are placed on the different types of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems used in a hospital: Cafeteria, patient rooms, isolation room, etc. This includes air handling and demand-dependent temperature, humidity and pressure control.
Demand-dependent control optimizes energy consumption. For example, operating theatres require large amounts of conditioned-air recirculation, leading to very high energy consumption. For this reason, the air flow in non-occupied operating theatres should be drastically reduced. Optimal results can be obtained with an occupancy detector for automatic changeover, integrated in the building automation and control system. At the same time, the recorded occupancy hours can be used for statistical purposes.
