A classical video surveillance system consists of several cameras, control desk with monitors and storage device (nowadays in the form of a hard disk, tapes are not used anymore). The cameras are either black and white (better contrast and sharpness) or color (can register the color of cars or dresses). They may be fixed (economical) or equipped with zoom lens and swivel motor (larger surveillance area).
They ensure the surveillance of entrances and exits, hallways, warehouses, delivery entrances, helicopter landing sites, emergency lanes, etc. The pan-tilt-zoom cameras may be connected to the alarm system. If a door is forced open, for example, the swivel camera may in a very short time be directed towards the door and record the incident with increased frame rate.
With video cameras, it is possible to assess from a remote location whether an alarm is real or false, then ensure that the most pertinent intervention is triggered without delay.
Video surveillance has a high deterrent value and forms part of a modern security concept. It lowers the demand for surveillance personnel, especially in areas with a reduced overview and in widely spread installations. Together with access control systems and the digital storage of images, it provides efficient and proactive protection against crime and vandalism.
