New study proves: heart scan with lower dosage possible using dual-source computed tomograph

A new study reveals that, with dual-source computed tomography (DSCT), the effective dosage for a heart examination can be significantly lowered, in comparison to conventional computed tomography (CT). The study also demonstrated that stenoses can be diagnosed with the same high accuracy as with invasive x-ray angiography. At the University Hospital in Zürich in Switzerland, 120 patients with suspected coronary heart disease were scanned with the world's first CT scanner with two X-ray tubes; a Somatom Definition from Siemens Healthcare. The Siemens application, Adaptive Cardio Sequence with the step-and-shoot mode, was also used for the first time with a dual-source CT. Siemens Introduces Dual Energy Applications for General Imaging

Following the introduction of the first-ever dual-source CT system, Somatom Definition, with two X-ray tubes that simultaneously generate different energies, Siemens Healthcare has developed ten dual-energy applications. At the 10th Annual International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT in Las Vegas to be held from May 13 to 16, 2008, Siemens will present its Optimum Contrast software, which brings new levels of contrast to sectional images created with dual-energy applications. Thanks to these innovations, dual-energy applications, which were previously reserved for special clinical investigations, can be now be used in a broad range of routine examinations that involve contrast medium. Starting shot for the Particle Therapy Center of the University Clinic of Schleswig-Holstein - Largest public private partnership project in German healthcare

Today the University Clinic of Schleswig-Holstein (UC S-H) commissioned a consortium of bidders including Siemens, Bilfinger Berger and HSG Technischer Service with the construction and operation of the first particle therapy center (PTC) in Northern Germany. With overall costs of roughly 250 million EUR, this represents the largest public private partnership (PPP) project ever launched in the German healthcare sector. As a competence center for tumor diseases, the PTC will be opening up new treatment possibilities for cancer therapy starting in 2012. In addition to Northern Germany, the center is intended to serve the entire Southern Scandinavian region. In its final stage of completion, the facility's three treatment rooms will be capable of treating approximately 3000 patients with particles per year. More
