During 2007, about 218,890 new cases of prostate cancer were estimated to be diagnosed in the United States. About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only 1 man in 35 will die of it. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer. (U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)).
MR plays a vital role in Early Detection, helping clinicians determine which men are at risk. MR increases clinicians Diagnostic Confidence: to exclude cancer in presence of raised PSA lab test, to help characterize tumor for proper disease management, or to stage accurately for proper therapy selection.
During Follow-up, MR Imaging supports therapeutic interventions by improving radiation therapy planning (RP), and monitoring therapeutic interventions. Additionally, MR can also be the modality of choice for early detection of recurrence.
