Getinge AG, a Swedish medical technology group, will take over the Life Support Systems (LSS) Division of Siemens Medical Solutions for 200 million Euros as of October 1, 2003. An agreement has been signed recently. As announced by Siemens in March of this year, the company was ready to divest itself of this division to ensure full compliance with the requirements established by the EU anti-trust authority for a joint venture in the field of critical care with Drägerwerk AG in Luebeck, Germany. Luebeck-based Draegerwerk AG und Erlangen-based Siemens Medical Solutions today received approval from the EU Commission for the proposed joint venture in the market for acute hospital care, subject to the following conditions: As announced in early March, Siemens shall sell its Life Support Systems unit (anesthesia and ventilation devices) to a third party. Also, in line with current corporate strategy, the joint venture shall continue to supply open data interfaces to enable integration of its products and devices with those of third parties.

Siemens Medical Solutions (Med) has announced its intention to divest its Life Support Systems business unit. The planned divestment is in response to objections on competition grounds which the EU anti-trust authorities in Brussels have raised against Siemens' proposed medical critical care joint venture with Lübeck-based Drägerwerk AG. Life Support Systems comprises equipment used to sustain vital functions of patients such as anaesthesiology systems and breathing ventilators used in operation theatres and intensive care units. More
