Dose saving in Mammography
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in the Northern Hemisphere. More than 10% of all women can expect to have some manifestation of the disease during their lifetime1. Although earlier detection and better treatment may have reduced mortality in recent years, 30% of women with breast cancer will die from the disease.
Mammography is the gold standard for breast cancer screening for women aged 40 and older. Digital mammography has improved diagnostics, especially in younger women and in women with dense breasts2. In most countries, screening programs have been established in order to support prevention efforts and early breast cancer detection. The right balance between radiation dose exposure and high image quality for screening and diagnostic confidence is of utmost importance.
MAMMOMAT Inspiration
The Opdose® feature of the MAMMOMAT Inspiration is designed to minimize a patient’s radiation dose and exposure time. Opdose® automatically selects the appropriate anode/filter combination (Mo/Mo, Mo/Rh, and W/Rh) and the lowest dose for individual breast characteristics.

Dose documentation from UPTIME Services
Increased patient care
With Utilization Management, dose information is made available in all basic and advanced reports for the SOMATOM Definition systems (from SW version VA20). It is an easy way to track system and dose utilization details at the point of care. With these reports, users can see if any specific values have been exceeded, indicating that a significant radiation dose has been administered.
Visibility of dose usage data on a monthly or multi-monthly period
Users get an overview of the total number and the percentage split of all selected protocols, while also seeing the available dose information for the dedicated period. The relevant dose values for a CT examination are the CT dose index volume (CTDIvol) and the dose length product (DLP).
Easy to obtain dose information
The dose information is already included in the basic report of the proactive service Siemens Utilization Management. Users obtain the section for total number of scan ranges and available dose information under examination types. Utilization Management for CT is available from specific software versions forward.
Combined Applications to Reduce Exposure (CARE) help you to reduce radiation dose with excellent diagnostic and interventional outcomes. Life is precious – take CARE.
The Siemens CARE standard brings together a wide variety of advanced technologies and applications to meet the needs of patients and physicians. This allows for appropriate radiation dose while maintaining excellent outcomes for diagnosis and interventions.
CARE for patients
Public awareness of the risks of high radiation has grown significantly over the past few years. As a result, dose reduction, especially in the field of pediatric imaging, has become a hot topic in the mainstream media as well as the scientific world.
Minimize exposure, maximize image quality
Reducing radiation exposure for patients today means reducing the risk of acute and potential long-term damage. Dose reduction is particularly important when treating children, women of child-bearing age, and patients who may need to receive multiple examinations.
Siemens has a long, successful history of delivering maximum image quality with minimum dose using imaging features that are unique in the industry. By offering state-of-the-art treatment based on the Siemens CARE standard, you may ease patients’ concerns about protecting themselves from too much radiation exposure.
Fast results reduce motion artifacts and multiple scans
What’s more, Siemens CT technology allows you for example to conduct scans over a large area with a 200 cm scan range and up to 0.28 s rotation time. This means you can quickly image your most clinically challenging patients – restless children, trauma patients – fast and with excellent image quality. Even if the patient moves, you’ll be able to obtain high-quality images that eliminate the need for multiple scans – and multiple radiation doses.
Minimize dose and maximize speed
In the field of molecular imaging low dose is also imperative for pediatric patients. Fast scans are of utmost importance to increase patient comfort. Innovative CARE solutions enable routine pediatric molecular imaging scans using half the dose at twice the speed.
Low-dose 3D imaging during interventions
3D information during complex interventional cases is of great importance. Low-dose syngo DynaCT provides this information at a very low dose, E.g. only 0.3 mSv during neuro imaging. So we can support treatment of especially radiosensitive patients with additional information.
The benefits of Siemens CARE for patients:
CARE for clinical staff
Radiation dose is not just an issue affecting the health and well-being of patients; it also affects the health and safety of your clinical team. The use of imaging equipment means that employers must be very dose-aware, and apply dose-reduction technologies to their clinical environments.
Dose reduction and reporting features help limit clinical staff exposure
Siemens CARE is designed to help your team get the most information possible from patient images, while protecting them from X-ray and radiopharmaceutical radiation. Siemens constantly measures and reports the doses used with our systems so you can increase employee awareness and enhance their well-being in the workplace.
Treat patients confidently and successfully with top-quality tools
At the same time, the improved, clear images provided with Siemens CARE features give your clinicians the state-of-the-art tools they need to quickly and accurately assess and treat patients. With Siemens CARE, dose reduction and excellent image quality are part of the same package.
Limit daily dose exposure
Staff members scanning patients who have been injected with radiopharmaceuticals do not have shielding around them for protection from dose exposure. Since most of the day is spent next to these patients, it is critical to reduce your staffs’ exposure as much as possible. With Siemens CARE features, you can have the peace of mind that your molecular imaging team is minimizing exposure risks.
The benefits of Siemens CARE for clinical staff:
CARE for business
As patients become more informed about the risks associated with radiation exposure, medical professionals are under increased pressure to justify imaging procedures. With Siemens CARE, you can advise patients that their procedures will be done using the lowest possible dose, giving your facility a competitive advantage.
Attract top staff by providing better patient care
The ability to provide better, enhanced care will also attract top medical professionals to your workplace. Like the general public, they are concerned about reducing radiation exposure for patients – and themselves. But Siemens CARE doesn’t just enable dose reduction; it gives your clinical staff access to the latest innovations in 2D and 3D imaging, enhancing their diagnostic ability as well as their well-being.
Increase clinicians dose awareness
Siemens also constantly measures and reports the radiation doses used with our CT systems. Dose information is provided in a monthly Utilization Management report that includes the average DLP and average CTDlvol for each scan protocol. Using this data, you can increase employee awareness of radiation exposure and improve their work environment.
Reduce resource consumption – and run your business more efficiently
Molecular imaging scanners use radioactive imaging biomarkers to visualize biological processes, and these biomarkers are associated with cost. Another unique advantage of Siemens CARE is that it helps you run your business efficiently. Reducing radiation dose translates into a more efficient use of radiopharmaceuticals which has a positive economical outcome. Additionally, an increasingly competitive healthcare market requires productivity improvements. Siemens CARE innovations also boost the speed of examinations, increasing throughput and scanner utilization while improving patient comfort.
Structured reporting on dose
More and more countries and authorities require the reporting of patient exposure following an intervention. To meet current and future regulations, Siemens dose reporting allows effective analysis of dose exposure and thus enables enhanced in-house dose reporting.
