From October 2011, the new global campaign “Turn your city pink! Raise awareness for breast cancer” will run for one year. Pink is the international color of breast cancer awareness and the goal of this campaign is to encourage participants to be creative and turn their city pink by taking action.
Participants can join pink charity runs, walk the city wearing pink, paint something pink, or distribute informative flyers about methods of early detection. Pink participants will be able to upload pictures or videos of their creative activity to the campaign Website and share them with friends to spread even more awareness.
Siemens will reward each entry with a donation of five US-dollars to a selected charity and the most popular entry wins a pink City iPad* each month. The participants can select from the following organizations to be the recipient of the donation: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Breast Health Global Initiative, the International Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and the American Cancer Society.
Early detection can save lives. In the early stages, the tumor is still small and the risk of metastases is significantly lower. Women who are informed about the risks, the medical care that is available to them, and receive regular screenings can help increase the chance of detecting potentially harmful tumors early.

Early detection is the key to success for effective breast cancer treatment. This has been confirmed numerous times over. Women who are informed about their risks and medical care available to them often seek medical checkups and increase the chance of detecting potentially harmful tumors early.
The goal of our information program is to increase breast cancer awareness globally by delivering concise information to women and patients as well as by supporting health professionals achieve improvements and deliver aid. Our breast cancer awareness campaign includes activities such as an international survey on breast cancer awareness conducted with women all around the globe, a breast care day during the European Congress of Radiology 2011, and a “Pink Ribbon” initiative that virtually united people against breast cancer in October 2010.
For the benefit of patients, the affected family members, and health professionals, we intend to investigate what women know about breast cancer and what information is still missing to achieve a better level of breast cancer understanding and at best, to achieve early detection. The results of the survey conducted by the GfK Group were presented at Breast Care Day during ECR 2011.
During this years’ ECR in Vienna, we will dedicate a day to raise awareness for the topic of breast care. The “Siemens Breast Care Day” will take place on March 3rd, 2011 and offers a wide program for professionals and students. In addition to hands-on workshops and a lunch symposium focusing on breast imaging technologies, a panel discussion between professionals and representatives of various breast cancer organizations will address the conflicts between medical and business priorities in breast cancer screening.
The panel discussion will be based on the results of the afore mentioned "international survey on breast cancer awareness," as well as a survey conducted among professionals to capture their opinion on the topic.
During breast cancer awareness month this past October, we collected pictures of people from nations all over the globe to create a virtual "Pink Ribbon" – with each new picture, the length of the ribbon grew around the world. Over 13,000 people joined us in the fight against breast cancer. For this engagement and in order to contribute to more breast cancer awareness, Siemens will donate €50,000 to the non-profit breast cancer organization Susan G.Komen.
