The Centre Hosptialier de Luxemburg (CHL) consists of 31 wards with altogether 579 beds. Yearly, the hospital treats 25,000 patients on an impatient basis and about 400,000 outpatients. In the future, the hospital’s clinical processes will be supported by the Siemens i.s.h.med hospital information system (HIS). CHL plans to implement the solution over several phases. For this reason, CHL highly appreciated the system’s modular structure. As a first step, the basis module of i.s.h.med will be introduced during the fourth quarter of 2009. This module provides, for example, transparent order and report communications which prevent double examinations. Upon request, the staff of the clinic are being trained accordingly so that they are able to handle the solution rollout across the clinic on their own after the basis module has been introduced. In addition to the basis module i.s.h.med, CHL is already testing the introduction of the surgery module as well as the modules i.s.h.med medication, i.s.h. med charting, and i.s.h. med ward to support inpatient processes.
What made this HIS especially attractive for the Centre Hospitalier was the system’s ability to operate in the two languages German and French. “Because Luxemburg has two official languages, we want to provide our employees with the possibility of working with the system in both languages,” explained Jean Paul Freichel, Directeur administratif et financier at CHL, in a recent press release. In fact, Luxemburg, located between Germany, France, and Belgium, has even three official languages: Luxembourgian, German and French.
Besides the full integration of SAP for Healthcare, the broad functionality of i.s.h.med was equally important. Also, since the IT solution has broad functionality, it is of use for every ward, which in turn leads to a tighter connection between wards. “We need a system that supports processes across departments and helps us to optimize communication and improve our treatment management. To this end, i.s.h.med is the optimal solution for us,” Freichel stated.
CHL is ready to invest in further process-supporting modules: At the moment, the introduction of the operating room module is being tested as well as the modules i.s.h.med medication, i.s.h.med charting, and i.s.h.med ward. The Siemens i.s.h.med hospital information system is implemented worldwide in more than 300 hospitals. It is considered as one of the internationally leading IT solutions in healthcare.
