The healthcare industry in the U.S. is aggressively working to achieve "meaningful use" of certified electronic medical records (EMR) to receive incentive monies from CMS under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). One Siemens customer is particularly well-positioned to succeed in this effort.
Leading innovator
Newport Hospital, a Lifespan partner, used Siemens INVISION® Clinicals, a health information system developed for the U.S. market, to become a leading innovator in the application of truly interoperable, electronic healthcare delivery. Its transformation was so noteworthy that it achieved Stage 6 of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics™ EMR Adoption Model in 2008. At the time, Newport was one of only six facilities in the U.S. to receive the designation, and the hospital is well on its way to achieving the pinnacle of EMR adoption, Stage 7.
Another example of the hospital’s leadership in healthcare information technology is its high level of physician adoption of computerized physician order entry (CPOE). More than 90 percent of all inpatient medication orders by physicians at Newport are completed using CPOE. Not included are those that can’t be ordered through the system, such as intravenous adriamycin.
“We get emails and letters back from former residents that say they never realized how good our system was until they got somewhere that didn’t have it,” says Reid Coleman, MD, Medical Informatics Officer at Lifespan, who was instrumental in developing the overarching IT initiative across the Lifespan health system. “That’s a matter of great pride for us.”
