The introduction of digital mammography has marked a major advance in accuracy. Siemens has introduced MAMMOMAT Inspiration – a next-generation digital mammography unit.
MAMMOMAT Inspiration helps to reduce radiation exposure, and to improve workflow in breast cancer screening. Ilse Veijborg, MD, Chief Physician of the Mammography Screening Program at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark, has been working with Siemens in testing MAMMOMAT Inspiration, that has been explicitly designed for streamlined workflow in breast cancer screening. It is a collaboration that she considers extremely valuable.
Fast and Ergonomical
“MAMMOMAT Inspiration works fast, it is more ergonomical, and radiographers like it. The time between exposures is less than 27 seconds, and we are able to schedule 12 to 15 patients per hour, which is high throughput,” Veijborg says. Positioning of patients is done with a foot pedal, sparing hand-and-finger manipulation by technicians. The compression plate slows down after initial contact with the breast and adjusts the speed according to compression resistance.
Veijborg notes that radiologists are finding the system ergonomical and patients prefer it to other equipment because the compression is less strong. The acquisition workstation is syngo® speaking, allowing easy access to request, report, and display images from all modalities. “Although, to my knowledge, MAMMOMAT Inspiration is not yet ready for stereotactic use,” says Veijborg, “it will be in the near future. Tomosynthesis is another feature we are looking forward to working with.”
