The statistics alone speak for the value of prevention in breast cancer diagnostics: Among women, breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer death. Each year nearly 150,000 women in the Germany are treated for breast cancer and more than 17,000 a year die from this disease. Worldwide, one in every ten women suffers from the disease. However, early detection and proper treatment improve this prognosis. Siemens relies on mobility to help move women to a preventative mammography screening.
In cooperation with Freytag Karosseriebau GmbH, a German carbody factory, and several customers, the so-called Mammo-Mobile is being developed. This involves a trailer, which accommodates a mammography practice and could widen the geographic radius for screening centers. For women in rural regions or peripheral areas of large cities, the road to high-quality preventative exams with the latest mammography systems just got shorter. This represents one step in the direction of early diagnosis and the effective fight against breast cancer.
For the European Radiology Congress 2008 in Vienna, Austria, Siemens provided one of its mobile screening units. Now the ‘showpiece’ is used in a regular screening program and on its way to further mobile screening destinations. In Germany, 450,000 women have already been examined with Mammo-Mobile systems from Siemens. Presently, in Germany and internationally, there are already numerous trailers from Siemens in use.
The modern trailer is also appealing thanks to the innovative technology: the digital mammography system MAMMOMAT Inspiration. This system stands not only for excellent image quality, but also provides a more comfortable examination atmosphere, which aims to make the examination more relaxing for the patient.
Ilse Veijborg, MD, Chief Physician of the Mammography Screening Program at the Rigshopital in Copenhagen, Denmark, worked with Siemens on the development of the MAMMOMAT Inspiration. She remarks, “MAMMOMAT Inspiration works fast, it is more ergonomical, and radiographers like it.”
Comfortable surroundings, quick and mobile exams not far from home: Breast care prevention gains momentum thanks to Siemens.
