At Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, David S. Parda, MD, and his team from the Department of Radiation Oncology are combining Siemens ARTISTE™ integrated imaging and radiation therapy solution with Brainlab's stereotactic radiotherapy and surgery technology. The aim is to increase cure rates, quality of life and, ultimately, life span for difficult-to-treat patients. Parda finds this combination particularly useful for treating patients with brain, lung, spine, and liver tumors that have to undergo second or even third-line treatment for their primary tumors or patients who suffer from metastatic disease.
With its capabilities for intensity-modulated and image-guided radiation therapy as well as both megavoltage and kilovoltage1 cone beam in-line imaging capabilities, the ARTISTE solution is ideally suited to achieve great dose and targeting precision. Parda calls it "the most complete and comprehensive solution for radiation therapy." To help ensure maximum dose to target volume while minimizing dose to surrounding tissue, ARTISTE solution's In-Line™ imaging enables physicians to verify the tumor's exact position immediately prior to treatment, and adapt to any anatomical changes immediately before or in some cases during treatment. The system also offers the ability to incorporate the dose used for pretreatment imaging into the treatment plan so that clinicians can accurately monitor the dose delivered to the patient.
"With all these capabilities and the data integrated via the syngo® Suite for Oncology2, we also expect workflow improvements at the accelerator," says Parda. In combination with being able to deliver higher dose with fewer treatments, these workflow improvements will also enable Allegheny to offer the ARTISTE solution's treatment advantages to more patients. "ARTISTE solution sets new standards for integrated, comprehensive radiation therapy by combining Siemens strengths in radiation therapy, imaging, and IT," Parda sums up.
