At an EHR Connectathon in Berlin, Siemens Healthcare demonstrated that its health information exchange IT-solution not only complies with the legal requirements, but in comparison with other products it is the best solution to emerge.
Trendsetting EHR
In the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering (ISST), justified performance of the interoperability of electronic health record-(EHR-)system solutions was demonstrated live for the first time ever, and through this a cornerstone for the standardization of data exchange in health networks was set. Siemens was the only participant who could thereby demonstrate the compatibility of its health information exchange solution – Soarian® Integrated Care – on all three levels, and thus capture the leading position in cross-sector networking.
Demonstration of typical scenarios
Modelling the established testing procedure of IHE, the interoperability of system solutions was demonstrated based on typical requirements of regional health networks. Thus, around 30 scenarios with fictional doctors, patients, and provisions were defined by Fraunhofer ISST. The scenarios involved both the access of authorized doctors and organizations into individual records as well as the access into distributed, authorized patient data in different clinics, plus the decentralized processing of the records by medical practices. Thereby, the interoperability of the demonstrated systems was not only tested among themselves, but these systems were also tested against a Fraunhofer ISST reference system in order to assure that all interfaces would be conformably transferred to the EHR specification version 1.2 developed by the institute.
The scenarios of the EHR Connectathon are designed for all industrial system solutions with different levels of conformity that the products can achieve by successfully passing the tests. Soarian Integrated Care demonstrated that it can network itself with other systems according to a peer-to-peer model, thus allowing Siemens to pass all three levels of the test successfully. This means that doctors can access complete data in a patient’s file from a hospital’s networked records over an EHR system access point. Only those files which have been authorized by patient consent can be viewed. Soarian Integrated Care performs with the comprehensive inclusion of all participants in public healthcare – the step from simple allocation networks to regionally connected care in many clinics and doctor networks.
