In the healthcare arena, Siemens is known for innovative medical technology and the latest medical information systems. The new Hospital da Luz (right picture) in Lisbon, Portugal, is a prime example of how close cooperation with different Siemens sectors can provide for efficient and highly modern, comprehensive solutions in this case with the planning, restructuring, and implementation of the new hospital. The private hospital operator is part of the Espírito Santo Saúde (ESS) investment group and maintain 14 smaller healthcare centers, private hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities in Portugal.
Hospital da Luz is a new showpiece project, which offers the complete treatment spectrum in one facility, including all the clinical competences of a general hospital, as well as a nursing home and residential home unit. The hospital is the first that ESS has built and managed itself. Siemens business units are already involved as a strategic partner with the group. For the new project, ESS wanted to further take advantage of the benefits of completing an entire project with Siemens. For that reason, Siemens Healthcare incorporated its imaging modalities and IT solutions with technologies and know-how from other Siemens sectors. “We looked for a partner who could offer not only a broad palette of products, but also a solution-oriented approach, and the best offer in this regard came from Siemens,” explains Ivo Antão, the Chief Information, Organization, and Processes Officer (CIO) at ESS (left picture).
As in many other countries, a new reform in the hospital system has left room for more private investors in the market. This brings new opportunities, but also the necessity for private hospitals to distinguish themselves from other privately managed healthcare providers – where infrastructure, rehabilitation facilities, and state-of-the-art medical and information technology are key factors in meeting patient demands. “Especially when looking at the integration of various information technologies, Siemens appeared to be the only company with the corresponding capacity,” say Antão. Hospital da Luz is supported by the workflow-management IT-solution Soarian®, which is linked to the multifunctional terminal HiMed Cockpit. Together, they provide comprehensive solutions for facility management and improve the overall workflow. Antão continues, “With Soarian and the HiMed Cockpit system, we can immediately access patient data and medical records anywhere in the hospital, even at the patient’s bedside, simplifying work enormously.”
With Soarian and other Siemens IT solutions Siemens provides the hospital with a more efficient and cost-effective workflow. The result: a more-patient centered and productive organization.
