Pediatric imaging clinical case reports
Recent case reports published in Siemens magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) customer magazine, MAGNETOM Flash, detail various MRI applications and their use in pediatric imaging. Radiologists from the Children’s MRI Centre at Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville, Australia, report on cases using the 1.5-Tesla MAGNETOM® Avanto and 3 Tesla MAGNETOM Trio systems. They reveal their findings in cases with cortical dysplasia, fusiform aneurysm, cervical spine trauma, neonatal* laminar cortical necrosis, and neuroblastoma – all in pediatrics.

Conjoined twins – surgical planning
One such case chronicles a conjoined twin evaluation using syngo® TWIST and syngo Diffusion Tensor Imaging. A pair of 11-month-old craniopagus-conjoined twins was referred to the hospital for evaluation of venous anatomy to plan separation surgery. The radiologists undertook repeated MRI examinations to plan the surgery with MAGNETOM Trio, powered by Tim® (Total imaging matrix). MRI venography using syngo TWIST enabled surgeons to study the results of embolization and surgical venous occlusion. The use of the application aided in the surgical planning (syngo InSpace 4D), as the images could be viewed as individual 3D volumes or as a dynamic 4D model.

Imaging for cortical dysplasia
Two cases regarding cortical dysplasia are also reported. One includes a 12-year-old girl who came to the hospital after an inconclusive scan at an outside institution. The patient was scheduled for a standard epilepsy scan using MAGNETOM Avanto and then referred to MAGNETOM Trio and examined using the 32-channel Head Matrix coil. The images obtained using the 1.5T MAGNETOM Avanto revealed a left frontal lesion. However, the increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the 32-channel Head Matrix coil and 3T (MPRAGE and 3D Space) provided the radiologists with a level of anatomical detail that enabled a diagnosis with a higher degree of sensitivity and specificity.
