Lydia, originally an orphan from China, was adopted in the U.S. when she was only 10 months old. After her original adoptive parents gave her up at 2 ½ years, she was re-adopted by the Dallapiazza family in Colorado. The family took her to see an audiologist after noticing a continuing pattern of loud, unclear speech.
“Little Lydia” was diagnosed with mild to moderate hearing loss but the cost of hearing aids proved to be too much of a financial burden for her family. That’s when Carol Meyers, a neighbor of the Dallapiazza’s, who also happens to be a Siemens Hearing Instruments Educational Specialist, stepped in and referred the family to the Sound Beginnings program.
The Sound Beginnings program started out as a one-year program. But through the help and partnership of Quota International & Siemens, the program is now in its third year of continuing to help children like Lydia who come from disadvantaged families gain access to vouchers for free hearing instruments.
A segment on the program featuring Lydia was recently aired on CBS News in Denver. Please click on the image below to watch the video.
