Siemens on TV: Heart Healthy Athletes
On Super Sunday, some of the world's biggest and best athletes push their bodies to the limit. But there is growing concern in the medical community about the players' heart health because of their large body masses. A new screening program by a former Cleveland Browns Quarterback is helping to identify and lower the risks that current and former athletes face.
Dr. Archie Roberts has founded the Living Heart Foundation, which organizes free cardiovascular screenings for former NFL players. Siemens Medical Solutions donated the ultrasound equipment being used to image the athletes' hearts - giving doctors a better chance of detecting heart issues sooner. Former tight end Marvin Fleming, who helped take Green Bay to the big game in 1967 and 1968, and current Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio are among former players who received the screenings.
Of course, it's not only athletes who need to be concerned with the health of their hearts. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease kills about 960,000 Americans each year. Expert prevention tips include exercise, a healthy diet and annual check-ups with your physician.
