Siemens on TV: New MRI Technology
Going to the doctor and being confined in a loud, cramped MRI machine can be an unpleasant, claustrophobic experience for patients. But new technology is making MRI exams more comfortable for patients and more informative for doctors.
New MRI technology called Total Imaging Matrix, or TIM, allows patients to be scanned in most cases without their head passing into the magnet of the machine - reducing the claustrophobic element of the exam. The system is also much quieter than old MRI machines.
The new technology is not only more comfortable for patients, but helps doctors diagnose patients better as well. TIM images the body faster and can provide a clearer picture of what is being examined. TIM allows physicians to look at, and image, a specific part of the body - like the liver, breast, or brain. When and if doctors notice something irregular, they can expand the exam to view a wider area - even the entire body without having to repeat the procedure or re-position the patient on the equipment.
This revolutionary MRI may be just the beginning. Researchers say TIM technology opens up a whole new world of imaging applications to the medical community, and the services they'll ultimately be able to offer patients.
