Oncology Product Background
Siemens Medical Solutions will showcase its portfolio of Proven Outcomes and Oncology Workflow Solutions™ at the 46th annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO).
In addition to a significant announcement at the show, a sampling of Siemens technologies that will be demonstrated includes:
The Siemens Vision for the Future of Radiation Oncology
Siemens will introduce new solutions in Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART). ART uses diagnostic quality images to adapt treatment delivery based on the actual state of what is happening at and around the tumor site. As part of the ART portfolio, the ONCOR™ Linear Accelerator will demonstrate Megavoltage Cone Beam* CT-based, three-dimensional (3D) image acquisition. Megavoltage Cone Beam imaging provides an ideal way to visualize soft tissue contrast inside the patient, providing additional information for correct patient positioning prior to treatment.
The PRIMATOM™ System, a multifunctional, hybrid configuration consisting of an ONCOR Linear Accelerator and a SOMATOM® CT Scanner with Sliding Gantry, provides 3D position determination for target volumes and organs at risk via volumetric image comparison. The ability to visualize treatment structures prior to treatment in order to assure correct patient positioning makes the PRIMATOM a key system in Siemens ART solution portfolio.
As a recognized expert in medical imaging, Siemens is uniquely positioned to deliver advanced ART solutions. Siemens will demonstrate the oncology capabilities of the company’s imaging systems at ASTRO, including the biograph™ positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) system. Siemens will also showcase Symbia™, the first product to incorporate TruePoint SPECT•CT technology. Also on display will be the SOMATOM Sensation Open CT scanner with an 82 cm large bore that, when combined with the COHERENCE™ Dosimetrist Workspace, forms a total solution for virtual simulation.
Oncology Workflow Solutions
Since their introduction in 2002, the COHERENCE Suite of Oncology Workspaces, a series of user-centric workspaces designed to increase efficiency and quality in the clinical radiation oncology environment, and the ONCOR Linear Accelerator have formed the basis of Siemens Oncology Workflow Solutions.
This year, the efficiencies provided by COHERENCE continue to expand, as COHERENCE Dosimetrist Workspace along with KonRad™ Inverse IMRT Planning demonstrates integrated smart multileaf collimator (MLC) leaf sequencing for efficient and improved delivery of treatment plans and high speed optimization of beam intensities.
COHERENCE Oncologist provides the visualization and analysis tools for diagnostic images, along with patient chart management, treatment plan review and comparison, and treatment image verification and approval. COHERENCE RT Archive provides oncology image management and centralized storage, with full support of DICOM RT and DICOM 3 objects.
Customer Service Solutions
The recently formed partnership between Siemens and Oncology Services International (OSI) to provide service, installation and upgrade support to Siemens oncology customers in the U.S. will be highlighted. As a result of this agreement, Siemens becomes the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of linear accelerators to offer service support not only for its own systems, but also for the equipment from the other major manufacturers of these devices.
Additional Customer Service Solution offerings include VELOCITY™ Data Collection and Beam Modeling Services, which provide Siemens customers with a solution which can decrease their acceptance testing time from three weeks to as little as three days, and MOMENTUM™ Physics Support Services. MOMENTUM Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) Training enables customers to perform IMRT treatments shortly after equipment installation.
* Megavoltage Cone Beam Imaging is a Works-in-Progress, requires FDA 510(k) pre-market clearance, and is not presently for sale in the United States.
