The NYU Department of Radiology and Siemens Medical Solutions have a multi-year agreement making Siemens the exclusive supplier of all the Medical Center’s imaging equipment for its rapidly expanding program in diagnostic and interventional radiology. The agreement provides for about 100 state-of-the-art clinical and research imaging machines, including some of the most powerful magnetic resonance (MR) systems (such as a high-resolution 7-tesla magnetic which can scan the entire body). Among the other state-of-the-art equipment the department is receiving are six rapid multi-slice CT scanners that will provide high-quality images at subsecond rates of speed; digital x-ray; two hybrid positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scanners for NYU’s new Cancer Institute; mammography and ultrasound units; and a picture archival and communication system (PACS) that will allow the Department of Radiology to replace traditional films with digital computer scans enabling radiologists to view and evaluate images instantaneously from anywhere in the world.
Robert I. Grossman, M.D., Louis Marx Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiology at NYU Medical Center said, “The unprecedented scope of our agreement propels NYU’s radiology program into an elite group of academic institutions. It will enable us to be at the cutting-edge in imaging research, attract the best trainees and staff, and continue to provide the highest quality patient care.” Dr. Grossman earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
