Customer Fact Sheet
As central Ohio’s only academic medical center, The Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC) encompasses 11,000 faculty and staff. Serving more than 50,000 inpatients and 850,000 outpatients, OSUMC is nationally recognized for programs in heart care, cancer, orthopedics, organ transplantation, rehabilitation, women's services and neuroscience.
OSUMC is also a national leader in applying technology to patient care, research, and education. The American Hospital Association has named it one of the country’s 100 “Most Wired Hospitals” - one of only 30 hospitals to receive that designation more than five times. U.S. News & World Report has consistently named OSUMC as one of America’s best hospitals and recognizes the Medical Center and the OSU Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital as two of the 38 hospitals they considered “America’s Best Plugged-In Hospitals.”
In 2001, OSUMC won the coveted Nicholas E. Davies award from the Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society, for improving patient safety and workflow. This award recognizes successful electronic health record and information-sharing initiatives to improve healthcare delivery made possible utilizing Siemens’ computerized physician order entry (CPOE) solution.
With the installation of Siemens’ CPOE Solution, OSUMC has virtually eliminated medical transcription errors and dramatically reduced the turn-around time for medication, radiology and lab results. CPOE will be further deployed for standardized order sets; improving decision support and evidence-based protocols used in complex patient care populations. Hagop Mekhjian, M.D. – OSUMC’s Chief Medical Officer - led the CPOE initiative and continues to be a driving force behind the implementation of other innovative information technologies at OSUMC to reduce costs and improve quality of care.Under the leadership of Professor Michael Knopp, M.D., PhD - Radiology Chairman and the Novartis Chair of Imaging Research - OSUMC recently purchased Siemens’ most advanced Diagnostic Imaging technologies to collaboratively advance the field of diagnostic and molecular medicine. For example, the Siemens Biograph 16 PET CT scanner will be used to characterize disease and non-invasively monitor a patient’s response to Oncologic therapies.
In September 2004, OSU inaugurated The Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital. As the Ross leadership seeks to redefine the delivery of Cardiovascular medicine, Siemens will support their clinical and research goals by installing its most advanced cardiovascular imaging systems including the SOMATOM Sensation Cardiac CT scanner and the 1.5 Tesla MAGNETOM Avanto Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system.
Forging new frontiers in Emergency Medicine, OSUMC will install Siemens’ SOMATOM Sensation Open CT Scanner. The Sensation Open will be installed in the Medical Center’s Emergency Department, marking one the first of its kind worldwide and promising to define a new level of care for trauma patients.
