According to the New England Journal of Medicine, dense breast tissue increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer up to five-fold. And while mammography remains the method of choice for breast cancer screening, a study published in 2002 by the RSNA found that the detection rate for non-palpable, invasive breast cancers increased by 42 percent when mammography was followed by a breast ultrasound examination.
