Siemens Sponsors HFM Magazine Roundtable: Hospital Revenue Cycle Strategies for Turbulent Times
The May 2009 edition of HFM contains a published roundtable from an event sponsored by Siemens at the 2009 Healthcare Financial Management Association Executive Summit. At this event, Siemens hosted a group of 10 hospital and health system executives to explore how provider organizations are responding to growing levels of self-pay receivables and the risk of bad debt. The roundtable reflects a variety of strategies being implemented or considered by healthcare providers as they attempt to address the growing numbers of patients who either lack insurance or are enrolled in health plans with high deductibles and co-pays. This roundtable also reflects the challenges that providers face as they consider practices and programs that attempt to balance the financial needs of their organization with the healthcare needs of their patients. The roundtable includes discussion on the following strategies:
· Adoption of patient advocacy programs for enrolling patients in State Medicaid, Charity Care, or reduced-care programs
· Segmentation of self-pay receivables to determine ability and propensity to pay
· Implementation of Point-of-Service Collections programs
· Bad debt purchasing programs
