With a family history of Alzheimer’s disease and minor memory complaints, Elizabeth Gabay had been concerned about getting the disease. But after taking part in a memory program at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute she has seen improvements in her memory and is not as worried anymore.
This program is detailed in “The Memory Prescription,” a book by Gary Small, M.D., director of the UCLA Center for Aging. Through his research, Dr. Small has found that patients who undergo the program experience a significant change in brain function after only two weeks. Using PET technology from Siemens, Dr. Small is able to pinpoint an area of the brain linked with daily memory and brain efficiency.
The PET scans have provided important empirical data supporting the notion that a healthy lifestyle could lead to a healthy brain. PET is playing a key role in this and other studies that may someday unravel the mysteries of Alzheimer’s disease.
