In comparison to conventional systems, the MAGNETOM Harmony magnet has a length of just 1.6 meters (5ft 3 in.), which leads to a compact and very patient-friendly MRI system.
What are the differences between MAGNETOM Harmony and Symphony?
MAGNETOM Harmony is a 1 T MRI system, whereas MAGNETOM Symphony has a field strength of 1.5 T. MAGNETOM Harmony is an ultra-short bore MRI system which combines high-performance with reliable quality and low running costs – perfect for private practices and community hospitals.
Which type of magnet is used to generate the field strength?
It is a superconducting (Niobium-Titanium), actively-shielded magnet with very high homogeneity over the entire field-of-view of 50cm.
What does Integrated Panoramic Array (IPA™) mean?
The Integrated Panoramic Array™ coil concept represents a huge leap forward and is unique in the industry. In this new coil concept, the CP Spine Array Coil and the CP Head Array Coil are integrated into the table top. Both remain on the table, and you simply plug in additional coils according to your patient’s needs. Each coil can be activated and deactivated with just one mouse click in the graphic coil element which is aligned to the anatomical area you want to focus on. The Integrated Panoramic Array™ allows you to scan simultaneously with up to 16 CP coil elements (Whole Body Array). Each receiver has a bandwidth of 1 MHz. The advantages are revolutionary: you do not have to change coils in more than 95% of all studies. Not only does this save time, it also makes examination more comfortable, especially for patients who are in pain (e.g. Oncology).

Both the MAGNETOM Harmony and the Symphony system can be used for a maximum range of applications. With the 1 T MAGNETOM Harmony system, customers can produce an applications spectrum similar to that of the 1.5 T MAGNETOM Symphony, except for applications which profit essentially from a higher field strength, for example 31P Spectroscopy.
What kind of operating system is used?
Siemens MRI systems use the syngo operating system (OS). In the future, syngo is to be the standard for all Siemens modalities. This revolutionary new cross-platform software language is developed by Siemens and makes operation simple and intuitive.
What kind of coils are used in Siemens MRI systems?
All array coils are circular polarized (CP) coils. This special arrangement of two 90° shifted coils offers up to 40% higher signal-to-noise ratios than linear designs. All array coils have integrated pre-amplifiers. Siemens manufactures a wide range of coils for every application.
Are there new coil innovations in sight?
Yes! Siemens has developed a new Peripheral CP Angiography Array (PAA) Coil which enables examination even of the fine peripheral vessels with high resolution. Also new is the CP Body Array Flex Coil and the CP Body Array Extender Coil. Both Body Array Coils are lightweight and have a flexible design, making them very comfortable for the patient and easily to position. Both coils can be combined, covering a max. field-of-view of about 60 cm. Siemens has a long tradition in coil development, and manufactures the coils at one of the world’s largest coil manufacturing sites in Erlangen (Germany).

What kind of gradients are available?
MAGNETOM Symphony can be equipped with turbo, ultra, and quantum gradients. Turbo gradients are cost-effective and designed for routine clinical usage. Ultra gradients are designed for routine applications and advanced clinical applications. Quantum gradients offer the highest performance for the whole range of applications, all the way up to clinical research. All gradients are actively-shielded in three axis. To get the best performance, the gradient coils and high-power amplifiers are water-cooled. The clinical results are excellent spatial and temporal resolution, shortest TE and TR for high image contrast, as well as the optimal signal-to-noise ratio.
