  • 8 RF channels in standard for the use of best array coils

  • Sonata gradient performance

  • 3TCare and iPAT

  • syngo MR user interface and applications and Evolve program

  •

Which research applications can be done on MAGNETOM Trio?

MAGNETOM Trio is suited for clinical or research MR of all organs, since effectively all types of applications will benefit from the increased SNR at 3T on the MAGNETOM Trio.

Which clinical applications are done on MAGNETOM Trio?

Through the availability of local coils, MAGNETOM Trio enables all body applications.
Combined with 3Tcare and iPAT, MAGNETOM Trio is the first generation of 3T whole-body machines providing real solutions to potential challenges at 3Twithout image quality compromises.

Can children be scanned on the MAGNETOM Trio?

There are several sites worldwide using MAGNETOM Trios for paediatric imaging with particularly useful results. The higher SNR of the 3T can really make a difference for safer diagnosis of the much smaller anatomical structures in children.

How many MAGNETOM Trio are sold and installed in the world?

There are more than 90 MAGNETOM Trio sold and 70 installed in the world in the last two years (last update May 2004). Installations are present all over the world, from Brazil, to China, while more than 50% of the installations are in the USA.

Is iPAT important at 3T? If yes, why?

iPAT serves three important purposes at 3T.

First, iPAT in single-shot techniques reduces blurring and minimizes susceptibility artefacts – which are typically twice as large at 3T than 1.5T. Therefore, iPAT helps overcoming susceptibility artefacts, for example at the base of the skull and maximizes image quality.

Secondly, iPAT reduces the number of RF excitation pulses and therefore reduces SAR deposited in the patient. For example, iPAT enables increasing the number of slices in the same acquisition time without increased SAR.

Because SNR at 3T is twice SNR at 1.5T, the signal loss associated with iPAT is not so critical compared to 1.5T. This means you can use higher iPAT factors at 3T compared to 1.5T, therefore speeding up your acquisitions and improving image quality of single-shot techniques.

In summary, iPAT at 3T provides best image quality with low SAR and maximal number of slices and allows high acceleration factors while not compromising severely SNR.

Is iPAT available on MAGNETOM Trio?

Yes. IPAT is a standard feature of MAGNETOM Trio, with acceleration factors up to 4 in 2D imaging.

How many RF channels are available on MAGNETOM Trio?

Leader in RF technology, Siemens offers 8 1 MHz – fully equivalent, RF channels since 1999, as an option on the MAGNETOM Harmony, Symphony and Sonata.
However, MAGNETOM Trio is equipped with 8-channels in standard. Within the context of the 3Tcare initiative, 8 RF channels enable to use the greatest iPAT factors, therefore providing best image quality with low SAR and maximal anatomical coverage.

Which clinical applications benefit from 3T?

  • Numerous systematic comparisons of 1.5T and 3T in general radiology provide evidence for superiority of 3T MR imaging and spectroscopy.
  • In particular, the 3T increased SNR, longer T1 and increased chemical shift at 3T benefit specifically brain imaging (high-resolution T2-images, BOLD). MRA applications at 3T can be performed with higher spatial and temporal resolution, allowing the visualisation of very small vessels and the higher frequency resolution improves the quality of effectively all spectroscopy applications.
  • In addition, the increased SNR benefits orthopedic imaging, by pushing the image in-plane to less than 100mm.
  • SNR-starved techniques such as small FoV studies, diffusion imaging, high-resolution imaging (vessel wall, …) also benefit from the increased 3T SNR.
  • Cardiac, abdominal and pelvic imaging show great potential, to benefit from 3T. In particular cardiac perfusion, MRCPs, and liver imaging show clear advantages.
  • Finally, 3T is the mid-term future of MR. Molecular imaging techniques are also in the category of SNR-starved applications that would be enabled by use of a 3T system.
  •

Are there any disadvantages or challenges at 3T compared to 1.5T?

    Yes.

T1 is longer, therefore necessitating particular optimization of the sequence protocols so that contrast similar to 1.5T is obtained.

In addition, Specific Absorption Rate (SAR – or the energy deposited in the body by the RadioFrequency Coils) increases by a factor of 4, when going from 1.5T to 3T. This means that SAR limits –set for patient safety - are more rapidly reached, needing alternative development to ensure fast imaging with great contrast, and best patient safety. This is the basis for the unique Siemens 3TCare program.

Susceptibility effects associated with fat, the frequency difference between 1H in water and fat, can make fat suppression difficult.

    Cost is increased.

How many MAGNETOM Ultra High-Field systems are sold and installed in the world?

There are more than 130 MAGNETOM Trio and Allegra sold and more than 100 installed in the world (last update May 2004). Installations are present all over the world, from Jordan, to Japan, with more than 50% of the installations in the USA.

What is the purpose of having two FDA-approved 3T products?

MAGNETOM Allegra and MAGNETOM Trio have different purposes, which are complimentary. MAGNETOM Allegra pushes the limit of technology to offer best advanced brain applications at an advantageous cost.
MAGNETOM Trio has been optimized for best whole-body applications at 3T.
