University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust has taken delivery of a portfolio of new medical imaging systems for its new hospital on the City General site to upgrade medical and diagnostic services for local patients. The equipment provision and project management is part of a 15 year Managed Equipment Service (MES) partnership with Siemens Healthcare. Under the agreement, ten new imaging systems from Siemens have been installed in addition to a variety of X-ray and ultrasound systems from other vendors. More

Varian Medical Systems and Siemens Healthcare have announced the signing of a strategic global partnership to provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic solutions and services for treating cancer with image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. The collaboration covers the mutual marketing and representation of products for imaging and treatment in the global radiation oncology business. This collaboration further comprises the development of software interfaces between Siemens and Varian treatment systems. The two companies will also investigate opportunities for joint development of new products for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. More

The Artis zeeTM ceiling-mounted system was unveiled as part of a new angiography suite opened by MP for Stourbridge, Margot James. Sudbury-based manufacturer and local employer of over 260 people, Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Manufacturing Limited, is sharing its experience of ‘Lean’ business processes from a manufacturing perspective with the Histopathology department of Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust in Greater London. A series of visits to the plant have been arranged. The Sudbury site designs and assembles specialist instrumentation for laboratories and hospitals around the world to do quick blood or urine testing. The devices are usually found in Accident and Emergency Departments, Intensive Care Units or specialist patient wards where doctors and nurses need quick information such as blood gas levels to make an accurate diagnosis. Spire Washington Hospital in Washington, Tyne and Wear has installed a MAGNETOM® Avanto 1.5T MRI system from Siemens Healthcare, and was recently opened by players from Newcastle Falcons Rugby Football Club. The static system replaces use of a mobile solution shared between multiple sites, allowing the private healthcare provider to conduct rapid scans and provide its patients with access to MRI imaging on an ongoing basis. This is helping to boost patient throughput and workflow efficiency. The installation also allows the hospital to offer dedicated vascular imaging, which it was not able to perform in the past, and has opened the possibility for further applications in the future, including cardiac scanning and advanced musculoskeletal imaging. The advanced client-server application is initially being used with a newly installed SOMATOM® Definition Flash CT for the swift collation, pre-processing and interpretation of clinical images. It has already allowed the hospital to reduce queues for workstations and it is hoped will eventually improve overall departmental workflow. The University of Oxford has installed Europe’s first 7 Tesla whole body actively-shielded MRI system from Siemens Healthcare. The MAGNETOM® 7T MRI is now in place at the Oxford Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB) within the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences to assist in research programmes to improve understanding of the nervous system in health and disease. The NHS National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has published guidance approving NHS use of new generation scanners to help diagnose and manage patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who are difficult to image. The guidance, which was prompted by Siemens proffering its SOMATOM® Definition Flash dual source scanner for evaluation, draws evidence from 24 published papers of which 20 cited use of Siemens dual source scanners. Dual source CT remains unique to Siemens scanners, and utilises two X-ray sources and two banks of detectors. Such developments have enabled continuous improvement of spatial and temporal resolution to optimise visualisation within the coronary vessel, whilst also driving down radiation dose. More

Located in the new state-of-the-art “Donald Gregory” theatre environment, the system is the second of its kind in the UK and is being used for interventional, vascular and CT-guided punctures. Plans for expansion of procedures using the zeego include use in endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunts (TIPS). More
