To cooperate and find solutions together is often a far more successful approach. The results of the cooperative efforts between Siemens Medical Solutions and Biosense Webster, Inc. in electrophysiology confirm this statement. The two companies are working together for more efficient electrophysiology ablation procedures and to shorten the treatment time for the patient. The results have been incorporated into the Sensis XP systems by Siemens, which now communi-cates bidirectionally with the electroanatomical mapping system of Biosense Webster. On this basis, Siemens introduces a new generation of integrated work-places for all hemodynamic and electrophysiological examinations that improve clinical workflow in the cath lab.
The measuring system Sensis XP detects the sources of electrophysiological irregulari-ties and effectively supports the physician in treating cardiac arrhythmia. The results of the procedures lead to additional workflow improvements in the cath lab. From a central patient registration to synchronized recording and display of events on the Axiom Sen-sis XP and the full interface with the CARTO XP Mapping System.
The new interface is an additional example of the successful cooperation between Sie-mens and Biosense Webster. Already in 2002, the two companies formed a strategic alliance with the goal to improve the ablation therapy of complex arrhythmias. Since then, additional innovative developments established new possibilities in electrophysiol-ogy. With the CARTOMERGE Software Module, for example, electroanatomical mapping data can be registered with previously recorded 3D CT and MR data.
“Strategic alliances and joint developments with leading corporations are important components in the effort of moving innovations forward. Especially in electrophysiology, we are able to further enhance customer support with integrated solutions”, says Nor-bert Gaus, the head of the Angiography and X-ray Systems division of Siemens Medical Solutions. “We believe that the solutions of highly specialized companies are key to in-creased efficiency in electrophysiology by improving workflows. We will continue driving these developments forward.”
“We welcome the opportunity to work in alliance with Siemens to help electrophysiolo-gists treat patients with irregular heart beats,” said Roy Tanaka, President, Biosense Webster. “We share a common goal which is to continue providing patients and their physicians with state-of-the-art solutions for these conditions.”
Background information:
Axiom Sensis was the name of the first allround talent by Siemens Medical Solutions for invasive cardiology. For the first time, all hemodynamic and electrophysiological exami-nations could be recorded and performed at a single unit. It provides the physician with the possibility of using a system directly at his workplace that supports interventions, implantation of stents, and ablation in electrophysiology. Sensis measures, interprets as well as analyzes physiological data, including hemodynamic signals, ECGs, and in-tracardial electrograms.
Biosense Webster Inc, a Johnson & Johnson Company, pioneered electrophysiology diagnostic catheters more than 30 years ago and continues to lead the industry as an innovative provider of advanced diagnostic, therapeutic, and mapping tools. As the leader in navigation systems, Biosense Webster’s technology also includes the largest installed base of navigation systems worldwide. With proprietary products such as the CARTOMERGE™ Image Integration Software Module, the THERMOCOOL Irrigated Tip Catheter and the LASSO Circular Variable Mapping Catheter, the company is changing the way electrophysiologists diagnose and treat arrhythmias.
Siemens Medical Solutions is one of the world’s largest suppliers to the healthcare industry. The company is known for bringing together innovative medical technologies, healthcare information systems, management consulting, and support services, to help customers achieve tangible, sustainable, clinical and financial outcomes. Recent acquisitions in the area of in-vitro diagnostics – such as Diagnostic Products Corporation and Bayer Diagnostics – mark a significant milestone for Siemens as it becomes the first full service diagnostics company. Employing more than 41,000 people worldwide and operating in over 130 countries, Siemens Medical Solutions reported sales of 8.23 billion EUR, orders of 9.33 billion EUR and group profit of 1.06 billion EUR for fiscal 2006 (Sept. 30).
