Patient comfort has been greatly improved at Hythe Hospital, a centre of orthopaedic excellence run by Hampshire Community Health Care (HCHC), due to the installation of a direct Digital Radiography (DR) system from Siemens Healthcare.
The Ysio wi-D™, a general X-ray system featuring a wireless detector, has assisted in reducing patient examination times and also eased the daily strain on radiographers. The flexibility of the system and portable detector has reduced patient discomfort during procedures. For example, the detector plate can be placed into position without the need for patients to be transferred onto the bucky table. This is not only more comfortable for patients in wheelchairs or on trolleys, but reduces the amount of manual patient handling required.
The Ysio wi-D at Hythe Hospital replaces a 15 year old x-ray system and radiographers have quickly noticed the operational differences. In particular the ease-of-use and reduced physical strain and stress on radiographers have been noted.
A simple user workstation controls the Ysio enabling it to be moved into over 1000 different positions according to the set anatomical program. Movements of the tube and detector replicate each other and even if the radiographer moves the tube manually, it is light, flexible and easy to manoeuvre. This is a significant benefit at Hythe Hospital, where the X-ray room is a single handed post imaging over 30 people a day.
“The equipment is a joy to use; the images are of excellent quality and the user interface is simple. At every step, from order to installation and training, Siemens has been professional and helpful,” said Sandra Thomas, Senior Radiographer at Hythe Hospital. “Procedure time has been significantly reduced and patients no longer complain about discomfort during procedures – they’re actually asking why it was so quick!”
“The Ysio wi-D can instantly reduce the physical strain on staff and the anxiety experienced by patients,” said Nigel Hickey, AX Product Specialist at Siemens Healthcare. “It is a superior system that is already making a significant impact at Hythe Hospital and we are delighted to see the positive results.”
