Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of only two Trusts in the UK offering specialist care to women. It recently installed two ACUSON S2000™ ultrasound systems from Siemens Healthcare into its Fetal Medicine Centre. Taking referrals for suspected fetal abnormalities, the department is using the new systems for screening cardiac defects as well as assessing mothers with conditions such as diabetes and epilepsy.
The systems offer advanced imaging capabilities that provide clear border definition and improved tissue contrast to enable diagnostic confidence. The high image quality of the S2000 is also being used to assist fetal diagnostic and therapeutic tests.
The ACUSON S2000 systems feature a fetal heart Spatio-Temporal Image Correlation (STIC) application for cardiac diagnosis. This innovation automatically acquires a high quality fetal heart volume using a sophisticated algorithm that compensates for variability in heart rate. This means that detailed cardiac images can easily be obtained. Its reformatted images display the heart rate in real-time and it also includes a preview mode to improve workflow. Both anatomical and functional images are available for review in multiple planes, increasing the accuracy of results.
“The images produced by the new systems are great and the level of detail is particularly useful for both larger women and visualising detail in early gestations. We’re also very pleased with the 9L4 transducer which offers excellent resolution,” said Veronica Donovan, Clinical Midwife Manager at Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust.
“We were delighted to be able to supply two innovative ultrasound systems to Birmingham Women’s Hospital,” said Bernadette Leonard, Regional Sales Manager for Ultrasound at Siemens Healthcare. “The versatility of the ACUSON S2000 makes it ideal for a range of applications and there are several solutions available to suit individual requirements, including STIC for high quality fetal heart imaging. These systems will enhance the standard of care at the hospital.”
