Kent & Canterbury Hospital, part of East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, is one of the first sites in the country to use an interventional imaging system in an operating theatre environment. The ceiling-mounted Artis zee™ from Siemens Healthcare has been installed as part of a bespoke setup to incorporate all the aspects of an operating theatre plus state-of-the-art imaging equipment.
The Artis zee brings together vascular radiologists and surgeons in the same room with the patient. This enables a combined approach to treatment, particularly during EVAR (endovascular aneurysm repair) procedures. The surgeon is able to operate on the patient immediately if necessary, in sterile conditions and with the X-ray properties of the Artis zee still available.
The imaging application, syngo® DynaCT has also been installed with the system. During an examination, DynaCT delivers CT-like slice images of an organ using the C-arm of the Artis zee. These projections are then reconstructed into a 3D representation which is sent to the monitor of the Artis zee.
“We had previous experience with Siemens systems at Kent & Canterbury Hospital and wanted an interventional solution that was not only cutting edge in terms of design, but could also meet our specific need for a ceiling-mounted system,” said Dr. Mark Downes, Lead Consultant for Interventional Radiology at Kent & Canterbury Hospital. “The Artis zee is a brilliant piece of equipment and it has proven its reliability since being installed.”
“The innovative use of an Artis zee in this environment has delivered great benefits to the hospital and we were able to assist beyond equipment installation to provide a unique combined solution,” said Clive West, Regional Sales and Corporate Business Manager at Siemens Healthcare. “We hope the system will make a real difference to the hospital.”
