The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, part of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, has unveiled a new SOMATOM® Definition Flash CT scanner from Siemens Healthcare. The system is the first in the North West and was officially opened by Professor Helen Carty, High Sheriff of Merseyside. The Trust will benefit from unrivalled image quality at the lowest dose and the ability to provide a wider range of services to patients.
The SOMATOM Definition Flash is a Dual Source CT system equipped with two adaptive dose shields to ensure that patients only receive the minimum and clinically relevant dose possible with the ability to reduce dose values down to one millisievert or less.
Located in the CT Department, the new system will be used for a range of procedures including cardiac, musculoskeletal, urography and pancreas and liver scanning, along with a general CT workload. Staff at the hospital selected the Definition Flash due to familiarity with Siemens’ products and a strong existing relationship with the company.
“The Definition Flash will allow us to offer a wider range of services and place the hospital as a leader in the North West for medical scanning,” stated Julie Houghton, CT Superintendent at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital. “We believe that the Definition Flash is the best CT system available on the market for cardiac procedures in particular, and are pleased to be able to see patients quickly and maintain low dose levels.”
After a smooth and rapid installation process, staff anticipate shortened waiting times and improved departmental workflow thanks to rapid scanning times and excellent image definition. “Temporal resolution and scan speed mean that examinations can be performed in the minimum of time, without the need for breathhold,” commented Russell Lodge, CT Business Manager at Siemens Healthcare.
“The SOMATOM Definition Flash is capable of handling a wide range of procedures and we are confident that it will improve departmental workflow,” said John Brady, Regional Sales Manager at Siemens Healthcare. “The hospital will be using the Definition Flash across a variety of disciplines, proving its versatile nature. We are pleased to assist The Royal Liverpool University Hospital in becoming a leader in the region for CT imaging.”
