Malvern, Pa., Nov. 10, 2008 – Rosemary Kennedy, RN, MBA, chief nursing informatics officer for Siemens Healthcare (www.siemens.com/healthcare), has been selected by the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) as a 2008 Fellow. This prestigious honor was bestowed upon her, along with 89 other nurse leaders, during the Academy’s 35th Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz., November 6-8.
The Academy’s approximately 1,500 fellows are nursing leaders in education, management, practice and research, and include nursing executives, hospital chief executives, policy makers, university presidents, among others. Kennedy is one of only a handful of nurses in AAN history from a healthcare solutions provider to be offered this Fellowship and is the first nurse at Siemens to achieve this milestone. This affords Siemens the opportunity to work with the highest profile nursing leaders in the nation to proactively address healthcare issues of the day.
Kennedy was nominated for this honor by two current Academy Fellows and was selected by the Academy’s 15-member Fellow Selection Committee for her outstanding achievements in the nursing profession. She and other new Fellows now have the opportunity to share ideas and help develop new strategies for nurses to drive the transformation of America’s healthcare system.
“This prestigious invitation is a milestone for nurses at Siemens, a milestone for Siemens in general, and a personal milestone for me,” said Kennedy.
Selection criteria included evidence of significant contributions to nursing and healthcare. Each nominee must be sponsored by two current Academy Fellows. Selection is based, in part, on the extent to which nominees’ nursing careers influence health policies for the benefit of all Americans.
The American Academy of Nursing is constituted to anticipate national and international trends in healthcare, and address resulting issues of healthcare knowledge and policy. Its mission is to serve the public and nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge.
Not only is the invitation to Fellowship recognition of one's accomplishments within the nursing profession, but also affords an opportunity to work with other leaders in healthcare in addressing the issues of the day. Fellows are expected to contribute their time and energies to the Academy, and to engage with other healthcare leaders outside the Academy in transforming America's healthcare system.
Resources and mechanisms available for purposeful networking include Nursing Outlook magazine, Expert Panels, the Institute of Medicine/ANF/AAN Scholar in Residence Program, and the facilitation of appointments to policy positions.
