St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne opened in 1893 on what is now the fringe of Melbourne's CBD. In its first year around 2500 patients were treated in the "low-roofed, old fashioned boarding house", as one newspaper described it.
The Hospital was established by the Hospital Sisters of Charity, a Catholic order of religious sisters. The order was founded in Ireland in 1815 and has been providing care to those in need since arriving in Australia in 1838.
